When your child finds walking, wearing a brace or everyday activities difficult, you want clear advice and someone who listens. We assess your child’s needs and discuss the options with you, involving your child as much as possible.
Care built around your child’s day
School, play, getting dressed and family routines all matter when choosing an orthosis. We start by asking what is difficult and what you and your child would like to change. An assessment helps us decide whether orthotic treatment is appropriate; it does not commit you to ordering a device.
What happens at the appointment?
Zishan reviews your child’s history, movement, joint range, existing support and footwear. Bring current braces or insoles, usual shoes, walking aids and relevant letters or therapy plans. Clothes that allow the legs to be examined make the assessment easier. Let our team know about communication, sensory or access needs when arranging your visit.
Understanding the options
Depending on the assessment, we may discuss insoles, ankle-foot orthoses, specialist footwear, Lycra garments or other support. We explain the purpose of a recommendation, how it would be used and what it may mean for everyday activities. Where appropriate, we liaise with your child’s physiotherapist or consultant so the orthotic plan fits their wider care.
Fitting is the beginning of using the device
At fitting we check the orthosis with your child and explain wearing instructions, skin checks and care. Growth, changes in activity and wear can affect fit. We discuss review arrangements and ask you to contact us if the device becomes uncomfortable, damaged or difficult to use.
Experience and a familiar clinician
Your assessment is led by Zishan Akhtar, Founder and Lead Clinical Orthotist. His experience includes specialist NHS services at Great Ormond Street Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. At OC, he remains involved through prescription, fitting and follow-up.
